David Shumaker, Ph.D.
Dr. Shumaker is a clinical psychologist whose main areas of interest include mood disorders, relationship issues, adjustment problems, health and medical concerns, and quality of life issues. He uses various therapeutic approaches including stages of change philosophy, client-centered, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and family systems methods, depending on the individual needs of clients.
Dr. Shumaker earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Harvard University and later earned a Ph.D. in clinical-community psychology from the University of South Carolina. He completed two post-doctoral fellowships in forensic psychology within the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
In addition to the clinical work he pursues at Commonwealth Psychology, Dr. Shumaker is a staff psychologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and is an instructor at the Harvard Medical School, where he performs forensic evaluations and supervisory duties. He has previously trained and worked in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, and mental health centers. He is an adjunct faculty member at Suffolk University and was formerly an adjunct instructor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
