Neuropsychological testing and evaluation

Commonwealth Psychology Associates (CPA) provides comprehensive neuropsychological assessment services for individuals age 18 and older. Neuropsychological testing is frequently requested by primary care doctors, neurologists, psychiatrists, or other medical and mental health providers when there are questions about specific conditions that can impact thinking and cognitive functioning.  Such conditions might include:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Movement Disorders
  • Stroke & Vascular Problems
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Cardiac Problems
  • Thyroid or Endocrine Dysfunction
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Depression or Anxiety

Neuropsychological testing can take several hours to complete but it is an interesting process and the time will go very fast.  You will be asked to do a number of different kinds of exercises that might feel like puzzles and games. The evaluation will utilize paper-and-pencil or computerized types of tests (no needles or wires!) that measure cognitive abilities such as:

  • Learning & Memory
  • Language & Communication
  • Attention & Concentration
  • Information Processing Speed
  • Planning & Organizing
  • Problem-solving
  • Visual Perception

Based on the neuropsychological evaluation and other clinical information, our neuropsychologists identify a client's cognitive strengths, learning style, and potential areas of cognitive weakness.  The neuropsychologist will then recommend interventions including individualized strategies for overcoming difficulties and might also make referrals for other services such as psychotherapy or psychopharmacological treatment, if needed.

CPA's neuropsychologists all meet the highest standards of education and training in neuropsychology.  These standards, as put forth by the professional bodies in neuropsychology and the Houston Conference, call for specific knowledge of clinical neuropsychology, neuroanatomy, and brain-behavior relationships; completion of an APA-approved internship in neuropsychology; and, completion of a specialty post-doctoral residency in clinical neuropsychology.  CPA only employs neuropsychologists who meet these standards.  In addition, our neuropsychologists have trained at some of the most prestigious institutions in the country including Drexel University, Brown University School of Medicine, Harvard University School of Medicine, and Dartmouth Medical School.

We are happy to talk with you about your interest in having a neuropsychology evaluation. Feel free to call our main number, 617-259-1895, or contact us on-line, and our neuropsychology coordinator will be happy to answer your questions.
