Dr. Merkl is a licensed psychologist with over 20 years of experience and continued training treating individuals, couples, and groups. Dr. Merkl has a keen interest in working with couples using Emotionally Focused Therapy. Her additional interests include identity (career, sexuality,) self-esteem, relationship issues, and depression and anxiety related to loss or life changes.
With a goal to help clients speak openly, feel understood, and maintain integrity at times in times of stress, Dr. Merkl helps to explore patterns and connections in relationships, to address the balance of home, social, and work life, and to heal any emotional conflicts which may be a source of confusion, pain, or feeling “stuck.” Dr. Merkl believes that gaining access to a broader range of feelings can be hard, but is ultimately empowering and can leave clients feeling less burdened, less alone, and more confident moving forward.

Dr. Merkl completed a Master of Education at Harvard Graduation School of Education and a Doctor of Psychology at William James College. She has worked at McLean Hospital, a range of human service agencies, nursing homes, group practice, private practice, and Arlington Public Schools. Dr. Merkl provides psychotherapy and counseling in our Newton-Wellesley office.
