Weight loss surgery may cure diabetes. Boston health psychologists offer pre-surgical psychological testing.

June 25, 2011|Uncategorized

Most obese people with diabetes will be cured of the blood sugar disease after undergoing weight loss surgery, a new review of earlier studies suggests. In a report published in the Archives of Surgery, researchers say eight out of ten patients could stop taking their diabetes medications following a gastric bypass operation.

Psychological testing is typically required prior to surgery to ensure that individuals are mentally prepared for the process. By identifying areas of possible psychological difficulty, treatments and resources can be put in place to improve outcomes. Health psychologists also offer counseling and coaching to improve or create lifestyles that promote better health. Commonwealth Psychology Associates offers health psychology services, including pre-surgical psychological testing and evaluation for weight loss surgery.
