Rapid growth continues at Commonwealth Psychology Associates. We’re proud to welcome additional new clinicians to our Boston and Newton offices this month.

Joanna Dixon, ANP-BC, PMHNP-BC

Joanna Dixon is a Board Certified nurse practitioner with dual certification as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and as an Adult Nurse Practitioner providing psychopharmacology treatment for adults. Joanna has years of experience in providing psychiatric care and psychiatric medication management. She regularly treats clients dealing with depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders.

Joanna’s philosophy of assessment and treatment emphasizes maximizing clients overall health and well-being. She regularly collaborates with other clinicians to provide optimal care and takes a multi-faceted approach to client care, including education, collaboration, and a focus on the “whole person” in order to help them improve their lives and sustain their progress.

Board Certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and an Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC,) Joanna received a Master of Science degree in Nursing from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions, and her Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Post Master’s Certificate from Vanderbilt University. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Basak Efe, Ph.D.

Dr. Efe provides individual, couples, and group therapy to adults. Dr. Efe strives to establish a collaborative relationship with her clients to promote healing and help them move towards a more meaningful and fulfilling life. Dr. Efe endeavors to provide a nonjudgmental milieu where clients can express and explore their thoughts and feelings. She assists clients in learning new ways to approach their internal experiences with openness and acceptance so they may become less threating or overwhelming. Dr. Efe focuses on helping clients achieve a sense of freedom from distress, become more accepting of themselves, feel more connected to others, and build a life that is gratifying.

Dr. Efe has received extensive training in a range of evidenced-based therapies and utilizes different modalities flexibly in order to create client-based, personalized treatment. Dr. Efe mainly practices from the perspectives of Psychodynamic Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness and Acceptance based approaches.

Dr. Efe has expertise in working with individuals who suffer from depression, loss/grief, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, problems with anger management, transitions between stages of life, and relational problems. Dr. Efe also has a specific interest in working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. She enjoys learning and understanding individual’s unique experiences within their own sociocultural context.

Dr. Efe earned her doctorate degree from University of Kansas and completed her pre-doctoral internship at APA-accredited South Shore Mental Health and McLean Hospital. Her training included outpatient, inpatient, and partial hospital settings. She completed an APA-accredited postdoctoral fellowship at VA Boston Health Care System’s General Mental Health as well as Primary Care Behavioral Health Clinics. She held appointments at the Boston University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Efe provides services at CPA’s Financial District office.

Adele Haber, Ph.D., ABPP
Board Certified in Clinical Neuropsychology

Dr. Haber is a board certified clinical neuropsychologist. She provides comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations for adults with neurological disorders, traumatic brain injury, medical conditions, ADHD, learning disabilities, and other conditions that impact cognitive functioning. Her clinical interests include mild traumatic brain injury/concussion, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and dementia. Dr. Haber views these difficulties as stemming from a complex interaction of neurological, medical, social, emotional, and developmental characteristics. Evaluations include comprehensive assessment of cognitive, psychological, and academic functioning, and Dr. Haber provides detailed feedback about test results, diagnostic impressions, and recommendations. She works closely with each client to help them understand their strengths and areas of vulnerability with the goal of optimizing everyday functioning and quality of life.

Dr. Haber earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from Wayne State University with a specialization in neuropsychology. She completed her internship at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center in the neuropsychology track, and she completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in rehabilitation neuropsychology at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan. Dr. Haber brings 10 years of experience in hospital-based practices at Carolinas Rehabilitation in Charlotte, NC, and Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, FL.

Dr. Haber provides services at CPA’s Back Bay office.

Kenneth Kavanagh, PMHNP-BC, MSN, MPH

Kenneth Kavanagh is a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Adult Nurse Practitioner with board certifications through the American Nurse Credentialing Center. Kenneth has been a Nurse Practitioner since 1996. His professional experience has been in general, outpatient psychiatry/psychopharmacology (psychiatric medications) across the life span, as well as focused work with specific groups such as adolescents, LGBT populations, and individuals living with HIV/chronic disease.

In addition, Kenneth has significant experience in the medication management of ADHD, depressive and bipolar disorders, anxiety disorders, and psychotic disorders.  Integrating both his psychiatric and primary care education, his approach includes team work between the client, other behavioral health colleagues, and primary care providers to ensure proper diagnosis and maximal treatment benefits that not only facilitate condition/symptom resolution, but also support the client in attaining their personal potentials, wellness and life goals. He maintains that the unique life experiences of each client mandates an individualized and integrative perspective when addressing their needs.

Kenneth attended the University of South Florida (Post-Master’s Nurse Practitioner Certificate), MGH Institute of Health Professions (Master of Science in Nursing), Boston University (Master of Public Health) and the University of Florida (Bachelor of Science).

Ken provides services at CPA’s Financial District office.
