Did you know that there are psychologists who specialize in helping athletes mentally prepare to perform optimally?
Sports Psychologists are employed by most professional sports teams, including the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.
And, with the Boston Marathon just hours away, it’s easy to imagine how such a daunting challenge might weigh on the psyche of runners: anxiety and self-doubt may be creeping in. But, with the help of a sports psychologist, some runners have developed many psychological tools and skills to help them manage stress, anxiety and self-defeating thoughts. Even those that have not directly worked with a sports psychologist may still be utilizing tools and strategies from the sports psychology world, which they learned by reading books or websites and/or by talking with other runners and coaches.
Many of the techniques, methods and tools that sports psychologist teach can also improve performance in other areas of life such as work or school. Check out more information about Sports Psychology and the larger area of Performance Psychology to see if some of the ideas are helpful for you.
